Abstract
In the first half of the 21st century the world’s population is predicted to grow to 9 billion people. In 1960 the population was estimated at 3 billion; a threefold increase in a period of less than one hundred years. The phenomenon of the super-metropolis, with populations counted in tens of millions is already a reality.
