Abstract
Located in the Los Angeles basin, between the Santa Monica mountain range and the Pacific Ocean, the city of West Hollywood and the greater Los Angeles urban sprawl disguises a geological function long submerged beneath the city’s pavements. Before the progressive development of the conurbation, starting with the railroad town of Sherman, the Rancho ‘La Brea’ benefited from the natural watercourse running through the area from the mountains to the ocean. The presence of the aquifer beneath the streets of West Hollywood provides the inspiration for Rios Clementi Hale Studio’s (RCHS) design for a ‘sustainability vision project’ at the Center for Early Education (CEE).
