Abstract

In 1699 the French explorer Pierre Le Moyne Sieur d’Iberville led an exploration party up the Mississippi river. Mindful of the presence of local Native American tribes, Pierre Le Moyne took particular note of the position of a totem decorated with bloody animals. It transpired that the cypress pole marked the hunting ground boundary observed between the Houma and the Bayou Goula tribes.
