Cost-Effectiveness of the Various Modalities for Pain Control

Perioperative Medical Management for Total Joint Arthroplasty

Abstract

Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) procedures increased by over 150 % in 10 years. Patient’s satisfaction and perioperative comfort are essential and improve general health, quality of life and functional outcome after this surgery. The degree of this satisfaction is closely correlated with postoperative pain control. Modern analgesia is based on the concept of multimodal pain control. This concept represents an association between drugs and other analgesic techniques in order to increase efficiency and/or reduce side effects of the treatment. Multiple protocols have shown clinical benefit, but the results in terms of efficacy and costs are variable. The goal of this review is to define the cost-effectiveness of the various modalities for pain control in total hip and knee arthroplasty.
