Abstract
This chapter considers the different sources and relative amounts of intestinal secretions. The discussion includes important functional anatomic features involved in the absorption and secretion of intestinal fluids and electrolytes. Related to this topic is a description of the mechanisms for absorption and secretion of fluids and electrolytes in the intestines. Finally the three basic types of diarrhea and the use of the fecal osmolar gap in recognizing the disturbances are considered.
