Abstract

Structural archeology, or the quantitative study of galaxy structure, can be used to disentangle the relative importance of the physical processes that make galaxies grow and evolve. This chapter summarizes the extensive history of structural archeology and updates the reader on the current state of the art. It is further discussed how galaxy structure can be related to the assembly mechanisms that build the two fundamental galaxy components: disk-dominated structures and bulges/ellipticals. Finally, the different regimes studied with structural archeology in Chaps. 2–4 are summarized.
