Abstract

The main business of human society is to safeguard the life of its members. This rich and fascinating volume surveys the many ways of protecting humankind against the threats to human life in today’s world—armed conflict in all its forms, inhumane treatment, disease, natural catastrophe, the consequences of man-made environmental degradation, and scarcity of food, water and health care. The emphasis of the book is on the years since the end of the Cold War in 1989–1990, and on the challenges to security, old and new, with a special focus on environmental and human security, which have arisen in that period.
