Abstract

As discussed in Chap. 2, there is significant controversy about the observed liquid–liquid phase transition in the yttria aluminates. To briefly recap, Aasland and McMillan (Nature 369:633–636 1994) observed clear spherical inclusions in glassy samples in a composition range of 0.24 < x < 0.32, which they attributed to a second glass phase. From this they inferred the occurrence of a liquid–liquid phase transition which was interrupted during quenching.
