Abstract
The historical roots of the semiclassical description of charge carrier transport in semiconductors are briefly surveyed. The concept of thermoballistic transport is introduced qualitatively, and its basic ingredients are enumerated. Finally, the contents of the book are outlined.

After having introduced the term “thermoballistic” into the theory of carrier transport in semiconductors, we became aware of Ref. [16], in which this term is used in quite a different context.
