Abstract

Global wind power capacity has increased more than tenfold over the last decade. Photovoltaic capacity additions have recently enjoyed annual growth rates in excess of 50%. Europe plans to satisfy a large share of its demand from solar thermal power generated in the North African desert. Such news may convey the message that a radical transformation of the global power sector away from conventional technologies towards renewable ones is taking place.
