Abstract
This chapter starts with a brief history of the OSI model and how it all started in the mid 1970s. Afterwards, the OSI model is explained in details along with the functions and duties of each layer in the model. Studying the OSI model is a simple first step into the networking world. At the end of the chapter, the encapsulation and decapsulation processes are introduced such that the reader would understand the end-to-end data flow from one host to another.
