Bedside Approach to Autonomic Disorders

Abstract

The processes underlying sleep are regulated by brain-stem and diencephalic structures interconnected with the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Sleep is associated with changes in ANS activity and disorders of the ANS adversely affect vital functions during sleep. As a consequence of this interconnection, several neurologic disorders manifest with both autonomic dysfunctions and sleep disturbances and, among these, sleep disorders may be associated or cause autonomic dysfunctions. Autonomic dysfunction occurring during sleep, particularly when involving the cardiovascular or respiratory control, has a negative impact on the prognosis of the associated neurologic disorder. A prompt diagnosis is therefore of crucial importance to choose the proper therapeutic approach and treat the risk factors that could severely influence disease prognosis.
