Abstract

In our translation we have made use of various signs. Any additions made solely for the convenience of reading appear in round brackets. Square brackets denote, as in the Latin text, presumed interpolations; and these we have written in italics for further identification. Angular brackets are, as in the Latin text, for lacunae; but in the translated text they have been retained only if of some importance for the history of the text, such as when the omission renders the extant text unclear and thus may explain the occurrence of a reader’s intervention. The footnotes are mostly concerned with textual explanations or references and only rarely with mathematical questions since these are fully dealt with in our commentary.
