Abstract
My subject is the history of nature. This means that I have set myself a theme far broader than is the custom in the run of academic writing. No scientist can master all the fields of knowledge touched upon in an essay of this sort. Therefore, I should perhaps begin with an attempt to justify my choice of subject.
