Abstract
Clinical practice in a healthcare setting provides medical family therapists (MedFTs) with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture(s) of medicine, which is remarkably different than conventional freestanding behavioral health clinics and/or academic institutions. Behavioral health providers (BHPs) functioning within healthcare settings encounter unique stressors that are often more intense and/or acute than compared to customary settings (e.g., caring for patients and families who are coping with serious accidents, injuries, chronic illnesses, and death). In this chapter, the authors describe concrete strategies for MedFTs to effectively enter and integrate themselves into healthcare contexts.
