Abstract

This study examines new tourism strategies in small island destinations in the Caribbean. Heavily dependent on a tourism sector that favours seaside activities and faced with socio-economic limits and outdated environmental models, these islands seek to develop policies which will maximize economic activity in a context of sustainable tourism. Beyond the scope of the Convention on Sustainable Tourism Zone of the Caribbean (the STZC Convention), which aims to establish the first sustainable tourism zone in the world, this article analyzes the development of ecotourism on the islands of Dominica (an emerging destination) and St. Lucia (which is in a consolidation phase).
