Abstract
On his return to Paris, after months of inactivity, Brown-Séquard was once more penniless, suffering from severe manic depression and suicidal inclinations. He and his wife were encouraged by two Mauritian to travel with them to Mauritius. Their arrival there, in May 1854, coincided with a cholera epidemic and Brown-Séquard volunteered to treat the liberated slaves living in shanty bush villages on the outskirts of Port Louis. His caring for these cholera victims earned him the gratitude of the whole population. In October 1854, with his wife, he left the island for the United States.
