Abstract
His first academic communication to the Académie des sciences was signed Brown-Séquard: the addition of his mother’s name to his patronymic. He took part in the Revolution of February 1848 and participated in the creation of the Société de biologie, the most prestigious 19th century scientific society. He shunned the practice of medicine, engaging in physiological researches on blood perfusion of dead tissues, on regeneration of nervous tissues, on heterografting and on the pathological consequences of lesions affecting the spine, describing a spinal hemisection syndrome which was to bear his name. Penniless, short of food, overwhelmed by mental hyperactivity and sleeplessness, he exhibited the characteristic signs of a bipolar psychosis.
