SoS and Large-Scale Complex Systems Architecting

  • Conference paper

Abstract

In the last decades, the systems designed in the following domains (banking, health, transportation, space, aeronautics, defense...) have been increasingly larger. With the growing maturity of information and communication technologies, systems have been interconnected within growing networks, yielding new services through combination of the system functionalities. This leads to an increasing complexity that has to be managed in order to take advantage of these system integrations. More broadly, the need to ensure the interoperability of systems with varied origins, not designed for interoperability, in order to valorize existing systems which are not best suited to current operational needs, calls for system-of-systems engineering practices.

In this paper we will focus on a specific part of the systems engineering process, dealing with “architecture”. We will in particular discuss the specificities of architecting systems-of-systems and large-scale complex systems.
