Abstract

Siwaliks representing very thick fluvial deposits; origin of term Siwalik; early investigations in India and Pakistan; stratigraphic classification of Northwest Sub-Himalaya; threefold classification: Lower, Middle, and Upper Siwaliks; Problems of threefold classification; other classifications; investigations in Nepal; fossil occurrence; early fossil finds; fossils from Nepal; mollusc and plant remains; depositional environment and sedimentation rates.

The composition of the Siwalik deposits shows that they are nothing else than the alluvial detritus derived from the subaerial waste of the mountains, swept down by their numerous rivers and streams and deposited at their foot.
