Abstract

The features which characterise the most successful school education systems as identified by the OECD in its PISA program are considered. Successful schools in Korea, Japan, Canada, Finland, Singapore, Hong Kong-China and Shanghai-China are discussed and recent developments in New Zealand and Sweden considered. The particular features of the schools systems in the US and of recent reforms there are considered in the context of the features characterising the successful systems. The reaction of commentators to the outcomes of international comparisons are reviewed. The importance of addressing issues of equity in access to education opportunity is emphasised.
