Abstract
A diverse set of drivers is at play in north east India in affecting forest loss. Growing population, declining forest resources, limited options outside of agriculture and in the hills, an over dependence on forests resources including fuelwood consumption, logging and encroachment. At the same time the onus culpability of deforesting the region should not be conveniently foisted upon shifting cultivators alone. In turn jhum cultivation has been affected by reduced fallow periods as population pressures mount. In toto, the end result has been that this biodiversity hotspot is ending up on the short end of the stick.
