Abstract

This chapter gives a brief overview of several key concepts that will recur throughout this book: the electromagnetic spectrum and fundamentals of spectroscopy. The material presented here will progress from basic general chemistry concepts to topics grounded in physical chemistry and physics. The purpose of this chapter is to provide the reader with a working knowledge of these concepts, as well as introduce the terminology that is intimately related to this field. To close, several spectroscopic techniques relevant to the theme of this book will be presented in some detail. It is anticipated that some, if not a large portion, of this material will be familiar to the reader.
