Abstract
A brief description of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the experiment ATLAS is presented in this chapter. The LHC design overview is followed by the short description of the ATLAS detector components. Next, a brief summary of the particle physics theory is given and the main goals of the physics programme at the ATLAS experiment are mentioned.
