Abstract
In the November issue of The London Magazine or Gentleman’s Monthly Intelligencer of 1783, the following letter by Lexell dated 30 September 1783 and addressed to J. H. de Magellan, was published (translated into English probably by the Editor of the Magazine) [Lexell 100].

Notes
- 1.
The prize competition of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences for 1783 concerned the diurnal motion of the Earth; whether it is uniform or slows down, and in the latter case, for what reason.
- 2.
The original French word was possibly ‘lunette’, lens, or ‘verre oculaire’, eyepiece. However, today the word ‘eye glass’ might be misunderstood as meaning spectacles.

Footnote in the original: “He had, in the morning of the day on which he died, made calculations concerning the motion of the aerostatic globe, which a friend committed to writing”. The text it refers to has been published by N. Fuss: “Sur les ballons aérostatiques, faits par le feu M. Léonard Euler, tels qu’on les a trouvés sur son ardoise, après sa mort arrivée le 7 Septembre 1783”, Mémoires de l’Académie Royale des Sciences, 1784, pp. 264–268 (OO Ser. II, Vol. 16. E579).

KVAC, Bergianska brevs. Vol. 20, pp. 34–35. “[…]

In [124], the Finnish mathematician P. J. Myrberg quotes a short biographical sketch of Platzman in Russian, saying that late in 1784, Platzman had presented to the Academy a paper entitled Nova methodus integralia per series evolvendi, without due approval by Lexell. On the following academic conference, held on 27 September (o.s.) 1784, Lexell criticised Platzman for his negligence, also pointing out the errors that needed to be corrected before publication. Princess Dashkova for her part reproached Platzman for being presumptuous towards his superior Lexell. After Lexell had passed away in November, Platzman formulated a response where he doubted the opinion of an “illustrious mathematician” (Lexell) and requested the judgement of the mathematical section of the Academy. Once a critical reply on the paper had been delivered by Nikolaus Fuss at a conference in January 1785, Platzman made a statement including some demeaning remarks on the academicians. Having written several defamatory critiques of Fuss’s works he was cautioned. He died in Saint Petersburg in December 1786 after an illness of several months.
