Abstract

Pelomedusoides comprises five clades (Pelomedusidae, Araripemydidae, Euraxemydidae, Bothremydidae, and Podocnemididae) with a fairly limited distribution in the Southern Hemisphere. With the exception of Pelomedusidae, the clades occurred or occur in South America. According to recent phylogenetic and biogeographic studies, non-chelid eupleurodiran turtles differentiated in the northern region of Gondwana (northeastern South America–northeastern Africa) at least as early as the Early Cretaceous.
