Abstract

This chapter tracks the ethical problems that arise in the search for new knowledge and therapies once considered miraculous. It covers organ transplants, research with non-human animals, and research with human subjects, including some very disturbing experiments in psychology. The formation and results of the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research is part of the story.
