Part of the book series: Scottish Graduate Series ((SGS))

Abstract

Ultrashort laser pulses can be used to directly inscribe photonic structures into bulk dielectric materials, such as optical waveguides and Bragg-gratings. This chapter provides an introduction to the technology of ultrafast laser inscription (ULI) – covering how it is performed and controlled, and the basic physics involved in the ULI process. The chapter ends with an overview of some of the areas where ULI is finding applications.
