Abstract

Municipal solid waste is the end product of the life cycle of all solid material consumed. Its management is a big environmental challenge facing all countries since it influences material use and the depletion of natural resources, as well as the need for landfill space, and health problems. The direct impacts on climate are relatively small (less than 5 percent — see figure 9.1).
