Schall besteht seiner physikalischen Natur nach aus mechanischen Schwingungen elastischer Medien, also Gasen, Flüssigkeiten und festen Körpern und ist somit an die Existenz von Materie gebunden, d. h. im Vakuum kann sich Schall nicht ausbreiten.
