Abstract

As one of the basic essential components for the vehicle dynamics the tyre and its different kinds of modelling are presented first. To characterize the overall dynamic behaviour of a vehicle (passenger car) different simplified vehicle models combined with linearized tyre models are used. Thereby the mathematical formulations for the longitudinal dynamics provide the information for the driving performance and the braking capability of the car while a separate linearized 2-wheel model is introduced to explain and interpret the lateral dynamics and handling characteristics. The application of advanced vehicle and tyre models is discussed to show the possibilities of investigations for nonlinear three-dimensional dynamics.
