Abstract
Vasospasm remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in relation to subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). This study examined the role of apoptosis in vasospasm at 24 and 72 h. The main proteins of the caspase dependent, independent and mitochondrial pathways were examined in this study. Adult rats were divided into three groups: sham (n=21), non-treatment (SAH + DMSO) (n=42) and treatment (SAH + PFT-α) (n=42) groups. Each animal in the SAH group had a SAH induced and the basilar artery was examined at 24 and 72 h for analysis. Severe vasospasm was found at the 24 and 72 h time points. The neurological outcome and mortality score improved by 72 h. p53 was shown to play an important role in the development of vasospasm. In addition, the markers of apoptosis decreased by 72 h. The findings of this paper indicate that apoptosis may play a key role in the aetiology of vasospasm.
