Die Pflanze ist in Ost- und Südostasien heimisch, sie kommt ursprünglich aus den bergigen Gebieten Indiens und Chinas und wächst bis zu einer Seehöhe von 1200 m (Yu, 1997). Anbauländer heute sind die USA, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Burma, Indien und der Iran. Wegen des Öls wird die Pflanze jetzt auch in den ehemaligen Sowjetrepubliken, auf Zypern, in Südafrika und in Österreich angepflanzt (Hager 1998, S.333).
