Die ursprüngliche Heimat des Mowrahbaums liegt in Zentralasien. Dort findet man ihn vor allem in Ostindien und Bengalen. Er ist aber auch auf Ceylon, Madagaskar, Malakka und Sri Lanka heimisch (Von Wiesner 1927, S. 758).
