Der afrikanische Bildhauer El Anatsui besuchte von 1965 bis 1969 das College of Art an der University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. 1975 begann er an der University of Nigeria (UNN) in Nsukka zu unterrichten. Seit 1996 ist er dort als Professor für Bildhauerei am Department of Fine and Applied Arts tätig. Neben Ton, Holz und Draht verwendet Anatsui recycelte Materialien und verbindet traditionelle afrikanische Kunstformen (vor allem im Bereich der Textilkunst) mit westlichen Einflüssen.
