Wachstum und Entwicklung unterliegen in Kindes-und Jugendalter einer geschlechtsspezifischen Kontrolle. Die Diagnostik und Therapie von pathologischem Wachstum setzt die genauen Kenntnisse des geschlechtsspezifischen Wachstums und der anthropometrischen Normwerte voraus. Die Unterschiede der statomotorischen Entwicklung von Mädchen und Jungen sind kleiner als die interindividuellen Streuung innerhalb der Altersgruppen.
Viele Krankheiten weisen bereits im Kindesalter geschlechts-abhängige Häufigkeitsdifferenzen auf, die auf genetischen, immunologischen, hormonellen und Umwelt-bedingten Faktoren beruhen. Es ist wenig darüber bekannt, in wie weit die Dosierung von Medikamenten zur Behandlung von Krankheiten im Kindesalter nicht nur von dem Körpergewicht und der Körperoberfläche abhängt, sondern auch vom Geschlecht.
