Das Vulvakarzinom ist nach Endometriumkarzinom, Ovarialkarzinom und Zervixkarzinom mit 2/100 000 Frauen/Jahr das vierthäufigste gynäkologische Malignom; 5 % aller Krebserkrankungen des weiblichen Genitaltraktes sind Vulvakarzinome. Die Altersverteilung zeigt aktuell zwei Maxima. Der erste Altersgipfel liegt zwischen dem 40. und 50. Lebensjahr, der zweite um das 70. Lebensjahr. Diese Zweigipfeligkeit ist durch die Zunahme von Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)-Infektionen bei jüngeren Patientinnen bedingt. Weitere Risikofaktoren für das Vulvakarzinom sind u. a. Zigarettenrauchen, Immunsuppression sowie ein Zustand nach Zervixkarzinom.
