Das Ovarialkarzinom ist ein Malignom der älteren Frau, der Altersgipfel liegt zwischen dem 65. und 70. Lebensjahr. Es ist nach dem Endometriumkarzinom mit einer Inzidenz von etwa 19,0 Fällen auf 100 000 Frauen das zweithäufigste gynäkologische Malignom. Die Mortalität wird mit 13,0/100 000 Frauen angegeben. Aus diesen Zahlen ist abzuleiten, dass die 5-Jahres-überlebensrate nur etwa 30–40 % beträgt, alle Stadien und Altersgruppen berücksichtigt; das Ovarialkarzinom weist demnach unter allen gynäkologischen Malignomen die höchste Mortalitätsrate auf (Tabelle 27.2.1). Grund dafür ist, dass es bislang keine geeigneten Screening-Verfahren zur Erfassung von Vor-bzw. Frühstadien dieser Tumorentität gibt.
