Das Harnblasenkarzinom repräsentiert eine der häufigsten onkologischen Entitäten weltweit. Es erkranken 260 000 Menschen pro Jahr an einem Harnblasenkarzinom, die Prävalenz beträgt 1 000 000 in einem 5-Jahres-Zeitraum, wobei Männer doppelt so häufig betroffen sind wie Frauen (Parkin et al., 2001). Das mittlere Diagnosealter liegt bei 69 Jahren für Männer und 73,4 Jahren für Frauen; dies ist unter anderem durch eine verspätete Diagnose begründet, so dass Frauen ebenso eine schlechtere Prognose im Vergleich zu Männern aufweisen (Micheli et al., 1998; Coleman et al., 1999; Ries et al., 1999). Laut WHO verstarben im Jahre 2000 weltweit 132 432 Personen an einem Harnblasenkarzinom (Parkin et al., 2001). Die Inzidenz für Männer beträgt im Alter von 45–50 Jahren 3 Fälle pro 100 000 und steigt bei der Gruppe der über 80-Jährigen auf etwa 200 Fälle pro 100 000 Einwohner (Ries et al., 2000; Pashos et al., 2002).
