Die beiden häufigsten primären malignen Lebertumoren sind das von den Leberparenchymzellen ausgehende hepatozelluläre Karzinom (HCC) sowie das vom Gallengangsepithel abgeleitete intrahepatische Gallengangskarzinom (cholangiozelluläres Karzinom, CCC). Das HCC ist weltweit der fünfthäufigste Tumor, jährlich werden bis zu 1 Million Erkrankungsfälle neu diagnostiziert. Die Inzidenz des HCC ist in den westlichen Ländern aufgrund der Zunahme der Hepatitis-C-Virus-Infektion deutlich steigend. In ca. 80–90 % liegt dem HCC eine Leberzirrhose zugrunde. Neben der Hepatitis-B- und -C-Infektion ist die äthyltoxische Leberzirrhose der wichtigste Risikofaktor für die Entwicklung eines HCC. Das fibrolamelläre Karzinom (FLC) ist eine seltene Sonderform des HCC. Es findet sich nahezu ausnahmslos in nicht-zirrhotischen Lebern.
