Andere Karzinome des Thorax gehen vom Mediastinum aus, vor allem aus dem vorderen Kompartment, wo Thymome bzw. Thymuskarzinome von malignen Keimzelltumoren unterschieden werden. Eine weitere maligne Tumorentität ist das Pleuramesotheliom, das auf die mediastinale Pleura übergreifen kann. Diese Karzinome des Thorax sind die Domäne multimodaler Therapiekonzepte. Ein differentialdiagnostisch hilfreiches Kriterium ist die Entwicklung der Geschwülste in typischer Lokalisation. Während sich die Thymuskarzinome und die malignen Keimzelltumoren im vorderen Kompartment des Mediastinums entwickeln, ist das Pleuramesotheliom eine Erkrankung der Pleurablätter.
