Sekundäre Neoplasien der Lunge finden sich im Obduktionsgut von Tumorpatienten in 20 % bis 55 % (Lee, 1983). Hämatogene Lungenmetastasen werden häufig beim Melanom, Osteochondrosarkom, Hypernephrom, Tumoren im Kopf-/Halsbereich als auch beim Rektumkarzinom gefunden. Bei gastrointestinalen Tumoren ist die Lunge meistens das sekundäre Metastasierungsorgan nach der Leber. Allerdings besteht auch bei gastrointestinalen Karzinomen häufig eine lymphogene Tumorzellverschleppung in die Lunge, insbesondere dann, wenn es sich um einen lokal fortgeschrittenen Primärtumor handelt. So findet man eine diffuse Tumorausbreitung im Lymphsystem der Lunge, die Lymphangiosis carcinomatosa, am häufigsten bei primären Karzinomen von Magen, Pankreas, Mamma, Prostata und Ovarien.
