Das Zentralnervensystem ist für die Verarbeitung der über die Sinnesorgane aufgenommenen Reize, die Steuerung der Motorik sowie die Koordinierung zahlreicher Vitalfunktionen des Organismus verantwortlich. Die Blut-Hirn-Schranke schützt das Gehirn vor Schwankungen des Stoffwechsels und Schadstoffen. Für die Deckung des Energiebedarfes wird bevorzugt Glukose verwendet. Benötigte Substrate werden durch spezifische Transzytose-Vorgänge über die Endothelzellen des Schrankensystems durchgeführt. Erregungsbildung und Leitung beruhen auf Funktionen von membranständigen Na/KATPasen und selektiven Kanälen für Na+-, K+-, Ca+-, Cl−-Ionen.
