Einzellige, mobile (Ausnahme Colacium) Algen mit stark differenziertem Protoplast (Kern, oft Chloroplasten, Vakuolensystem, Periplast). Zellen nackt oder mit strukturreicher Spezialhülle (= Lorica). Fast ausschliesslich im Süsswasser lebend. Autotroph, saprophytisch (farblose Arten) oder parasitisch im Darm von Amphibien.
