Einzellige, verholzte Haare und Drusen von Calciumoxalat sind häufig (auch in den Blüten); die Gestalt der Haare erinnert stark an die Trichome gewisser Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae. Die Familie steht den Cunoniaceen (insbesondere Spiraeanthemum), Rosaceen und Saxifragaceen nahe.
