Abstract

The term stress concentration refers to the presence within a solid of a highly stressed region that occupies only a small part of the solid. It has long been recognized as an important engineering consideration in the design of load bearing components. Much of the routine stress analysis associated with mechanical design is aimed at improving the distribution of stress in zones of high stress.
