Part of the book series: Molecular and Cell Biology Updates ((MCBU))

Summary

The evidence for the oxidative modification of low density lipoprotein (LDL) and its subsequent recognition by the scavenger receptors on macrophages in vitro is clear. The presence of oxidatively modified LDL in atherosclerotic lesions is well-recognised. However, the mechanism whereby LDL becomes oxidised in vivo is yet to be clarified. New case control studies and cross-sectional random surveys in several European countries suggest a role for dietary antioxidants in protecting LDL from oxidation.

In this review of the series of presentations on Oxidised Low Density Lipoproteins, several experts have contributed novel data on:

  1. i

    potential modes of oxidation of LDL in vivo;

  2. ii

    evidence for erythrocyte-mediated LDL oxidation;

  3. iii

    the significance of hydroperoxide levels;

  4. iv

    the importance of plasma and LDL antioxidant status, their concerted action and the relevance of minor, e.g. ubiquinol-10, as well as major components;

  5. v

    the interpretation of the lag phase and its relationship with oxidisability of LDL.
