Abstract
The displacement structure is introduced in this chapter as a general framework for the presentation of several algorithms related to the description of the positive and contractive block matrices. The Gaussian elimination procedure is exploited in order to deduce a so-called generalized Schur algorithm for displacement structures. An associated transmission-line interpretation of the algorithm is also discussed in details, and several examples involving interpolation and linear filtering illustrate the main results.
