Eine Matrix M der Grösse 5 x 3 ist eine Doppelfolge1 von 5 mal 3 reellen Zahlen, die man zur Veranschaulichung in einer rechteckigen Tabelle zusammenstellt. Ein konkretes Beispiel ist:
Die Zahl \(\sqrt 2 \) ist der Eintrag von M in der 3. Zeile und 1. Spalte. Wir schreiben dafür M 31 = \(\sqrt 2 \). Analog ist M 23 = −3, M 52 = 5,… Die Menge aller Matrizen der Grösse 5x3 wird mit ℝ5x3 bezeichnet.
