Summary
A new subspecies, Knipowitschia punctatissima croatica, is described on the basis of material from Dalmatia, Croatia. It shares several characters with K. p. punctatissima: the males have several vertical bars, there are no sensory canals on the head, the suborbital pore series a is present and the scales are almost completely lacking, being restricted to a pectoral axillary patch. K. p. croatica differs in some meristic characters: 15 – 18 vertical dark bars on the sides of the male, 32–33 vertebrae, D1 VI, D2 8–9 and 15 caudal rays. It was caught in Polje Jezero, at 26 m altitude, in the vicinity of the town of Vrgorac, about 10 km from the sea.
